One can reason through the issue and see that there are no morally pertinent differences between a black man and white man.

One can also recognize that we often act based on emotion not reason. The fact that pro-lifers acknowledge this emotional behavior in no way denies their beliefs based in reason.

Your conclusion just doesn't follow from your premises.Drewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03178352431939269649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1442827238174603755.post-91375990596982908812011-11-09T12:27:47.202-08:002011-11-09T12:27:47.202-08:00Let's take the example of your racist abolitio...Let's take the example of your racist abolitionist. First point, and most importantly, if the abolitionist were to convert to pro-slavery on the spot, it wouldn't make slavery moral. You've implied several times now that I'm saying "beliefs make something true". I don't know how many times I can say this: "People's beliefs don't make something true". If I offer a picture, will you not say it again? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Classical-Definition-of-Kno.svg
So just so we get this out of the way, let me say it even one more time: the moral question of slavery is not decided by people's opinions.

Second, even if the abolitionist says he would still save the white person instead of 100 black slaves, he still has arguments against slavery. The abolitionist could say that slavery is cruel. As an example, we have laws against animal cruelty, yet we would let 100 chickens die to save 1 person.

However, and this is the point to take home, there is one thing this racist abolitionist can't do: He can not say that he BELIEVES that the black man is equal to the white man. If he says this, he is a liar. If he believed that a black person was of equal worth to the white, he would not let 100 blacks die to save 1 white person. Similarly, unless you are willing to say you'd save the 100 zygotes, you are lying if you say you believe the zygote is of equal worth to a toddler.Michael B.https://www.blogger.com/profile/04125455071613580680noreply@blogger.com
