How Sad [SK]

My daughter's school sent home the following notice yesterday:

SUPERHERO DAY!
Who: 1st grade students

What: Come dressed as a superhero (no swords, guns, or other violent accessories--nice superheroes only)!

Why: To celebrate reading the story 'Space Pup.'

Each Child is encouraged to dress as a superhero.
Seriously? You mean Joshua Chamberlain, Ulysses S. Grant, Winston Churchill, Douglas MacAarthur, George Washington, Samuel Adams, and the men and women fighting terrorism in Iraq need not apply?

My problem isn't that the school bans toy weapons. (Though I think that's sometimes ridiculous as well.) My issue is the definition of a 'nice' superhero--that is, one that doesn't fight. Well, is it 'nice' to let a sexual predator mess with your kid if the only way you can stop him is with force? What a horrible lesson to teach our kids, especially young boys who may one day be called on to defend their wives or dependent children. The only superhero this school allows is a cartoon celebrity like 'Space Pup.'

God help us.

  1. SK,
Once,my husband Mark, who is very nice, and non-violent by nature, had to defend me in a physical way against another man. Talking and being polite got him nowhere with this person so Mark was forced to use physical force. All was well as the other fellow had learned some manners from the altercation with Mark, so I think all the better. It is a shame that many people are trying to tell our kids that defending someone is not "nice". When i think of Superman, I do not think of violence. i think of rescue, there is a difference there. For example, we were watching "Walker, Texas Ranger" with the kids one night. I began to get a bit uncomfortable about my youngest, who was 8 at the time. I made a comment to her about maybe she should not be watching all this violence. Without missing a beat she replied.."Mommy, he is saving the kids from the bad guys. That's not violence, that's justice!". Out of the mouths of babes. I had a friend in Maryland who heard his single female neighbor screaming for help as she was about to be raped in her bedroom. He jumped out of bed and grabbed his weapon and fired 2 shots into the air. The guy ran off. Guess what? My friend was arrested for discharging a firearm in an non-lifethreatening situation. In other words, since this young, pretty, SINGLE, girl was not going to be killed, just raped, it was not a necessary use of the firearm, therefore, he broke the law! Boy, talk about being upside down! Lori V.
